Seems they are close to the same thing only the 260 carries old world styling and the Triplett is more modern looking.

Well if you have an opportunity to post a preference please do with the reasons if you have them.

Me, I'm gonna find out. Had a Tripeltt for years and now a Simpson drops in my lap, corroded battery connection no battery cover but hey, It's a 260 and probably works with a little clean up. But I do use my digital auto-ranging meter more.

Seems you find fans on both sides. For me it depends which connectors it uses. I understand why they used those inverted banana jacks on the Series 7 and later, but I do not like them. I wish they'd have gone with the standard shrouded banana plugs that everyone else uses. I think later Triplett 630's used a similarly stupid connector though, so I guess its splitting hairs. I've never owned a 630 myself, but I've got 4 260's. Two were free, two were very cheap. Since I've never found free or nearly free Triplett meters, I must conclude that the Simpsons are a better value.

The Triplett 60 and the Simpson 260-8P, both use inverted banana and I have found them on the bay if making ones own 1000V test leads. Triplett leads are soldered into the female banana section. The 8P was a bit corroded and thrown out by a friend's boss. He has provided me with a few different things. I fixed the 8P with the Weller 1201 and 1302 irons he gave me. I did have to grab a station off the bay to drive these two irons.

Yes, free seems to be the going rate for these meters. Nice.

Can a 260 do damage to something I'm working on if used incorrectly? I picked one up with the carrying case last year at a yard sale. The fellow who sold it to me used to repair elevators and warned me to be careful, something about it puts out 5V. I've been afraid to use it since.

5v ?

maybe measuring. resistance

never hurt anything with mine

if you do not know what you are doing you could damage the device under test the meter or yourself.

I have a Simpson, so I like that one. But, that being said, both the Triplett and the Simpson had versions with and without a mirrored dial-plate. I'd pick the one with the mirrored dial-plate because it's easier to get an accurate reading. I haven't used my Simpson in who knows how long because I have a couple of Fluke's and an HP bench meter.

Do the ones you bought for your Triplett fit the Simpson then? If so, I can make some adapters so I can use my good Fluke test lead set that has the various types of ends. I really like those grabber attachments for things. I'm short one set of workable leads for my Simpsons anyway, and the only pairs I have are genuine Simpson leads that go for about $35 a pop. I haven't been able to bring myself to cut one up or buy another set for a meter I'm not actively using.

The Simpson in the phenolic case is 1530 grams with leads the Triplett is 1230 in plastic case and 1727 with optional carrying case, making the Simpson seem heavy as there is a good bit of space in the Triplett.

I tried the leads and the 260 leads will work with the 60 but they stick out a bit. One could trim the tip insulation back about 1/8th inch to allow the lead to push down further into the Triplett meter. The Triplett leads and the Chinese silicone coated female banana connectors are both a bit tight to go into the Simpson without some work. A little trimming and maybe some spray lube on the outside of the connector should make them work fine.
